IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter A.
Duhamel, Md
August 9, 1931 – March 6, 2025
Dr. Peter Duhamel, a beloved husband, father, and dedicated physician, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and kindness.
Born in South Dakota, Peter was a fourth-generation Duhamel in Rapid City. From an early age, he embarked on a journey of education that took him across the country—attending elementary school in Sturgis, SD, and O'Neill, NE, high school at Campion in Prairie du Chien, WI, college at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and medical school at St. Louis University. Despite his travels, he always returned to Rapid City in the summers, working as a guide at Duhamel Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns, clerking at the Duhamel Trading Post, and playing in the Rapid City Municipal Band.
After earning his medical degree, Peter completed an internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he met Lois, the love of his life. They married and remained in Detroit while Peter pursued a residency in General Surgery. His medical career was briefly interrupted when he was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Forrestal and later at the Naval Hospital in Newport, RI, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Following his service, Peter opened a solo private practice in General Surgery, first in Southfield, MI, and later in Rochester, MI, where he became deeply involved in the medical community. As his practice grew, he took on leadership roles, serving as Chief of Staff at Crittenton Hospital and later as President of both the Oakland County and Michigan State Medical Societies. His dedication to the medical profession extended nationally, where he played a key role in the AMA's Hospital Medical Staff Section and was a founding member and President of the American Society of General Surgeons.
Beyond his medical contributions, Peter was a committed member of his community. He was a founding member of St. Irenaeus Catholic Church and the Great Oaks Country Club, an active member of the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, and a proud Rochester Rotarian for over 50 years. His dedication to service continued in retirement as a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club in Marco Island, FL. Peter never lost touch with his roots in Rapid City, making frequent family trips and serving on the board of Duhamel Broadcasting Enterprises. He was also a Life Member of the Western South Dakota Buckaroos.
In retirement, he and Lois enjoyed winters in Marco Island, where they built a vibrant community of friends, spent time on the beach, played golf, and traveled the world. Peter took great joy in collecting hand-carved wooden statues from every country he visited, building an impressive collection.
Above all, Peter cherished his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lois Germain Duhamel; his daughter, Katy Gallagher; his parents, Francis "Bud" Duhamel and Helen Seidell Duhamel; and his sister, Marguerite White. He is survived by his siblings, William Duhamel and Kathy Duhamel; his children, Peggy Duhamel (Jim Gurney) and Alex Duhamel (Christie); and his cherished grandchildren, Zoe Gurney, Peter Duhamel, and Joanna Duhamel. His legacy of dedication, kindness, and service will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of his life was held on Monday, April 21st at 11:00 a.m. at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, 771 Old Perch Road., Rochester Hills, MI 48309.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rochester Rotary Charities Fund in Peter's name at the Rochester Community Foundation.
