Obituary

Philip "Phil" Brekhus

July 17, 1945 – May 5, 2025

Philip "Phil" Brekhus, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at home surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness, just weeks after celebrating his 54th wedding anniversary. He was 79.

Phil was born to Alice (Sierth) and Milo Brekhus and raised in Rapid City. He graduated from Rapid City High School in 1963. Phil went on to attend the University of South Dakota. Much fun was had by all.

Phil served for six years as a Helicopter Ambulance Medic (1085th) in the South Dakota National Guard. His bravery and commitment to helping others were never more evident than during the devastating Rapid City Flood of 1972, where he was airborne daily involved in rescue and medical efforts.

Phil devoted himself to the family business, Brekhus Buick. In 1975, the family built Phil Brekhus Chevrolet-Buick in Spearfish. Later in 1980, Phil and Lana moved to Rapid City to become the Dealer for Brekhus Honda in partnership with his brother, who ran Brekhus Buick. The brothers later purchased National Car Rental. His knowledge and warmth made him a trusted presence to many.

Phil's life was anchored by the love of his wife, Lana Brekhus, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage marked by laughter, resilience, and unwavering devotion. Together, they built a family rooted in strong values and unconditional love.

He is survived by his wife, Lana; his son, William Brekhus; his daughter, Lisa Corner, (Glain); and his four granddaughters, Hannah Corner, Rileigh Corner, Lindsey Corner, and Isabella Brekhus. He is also survived by his brother, Jim Brekhus, (Kris); his sister, Barbara Allen; his yellow lab Maggie and Shih Tzu Penny as well as a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.

An avid outdoorsman and sportsman, Phil found joy in many hobbies. He was a champion golfer, hunter, archer, bowler, and trap shooter—passions that brought him great satisfaction and many cherished friendships over the years.

Phil will be remembered for his quiet strength, his kind heart, and his deep loyalty to family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love and integrity that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday May 31st at 10:30am at Osheim Schmidt Funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Phil's memory to the Black Hills Animal Shelter, supporting the care and shelter of animals in need.
