Obituary

Phylis D. "Philly" Johnson, 86, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Phylis D. Hoke was born on December 19, 1925, in Lincoln, Neb., to Orville D. and Lillian (Bundy) Hoke. She graduated from Lincoln High School and went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1948. Philly came to Rapid City in 1948 to teach Physical Education at Rapid City High School. There she met the band director, Duane Johnson. Philly and Duane married on August 12, 1950, in Lincoln, and the couple had two children, Babs and Jeff. During her career with the Rapid City School System, she served as the Rapid City Stevens Golf and Tennis Coach and was a Rapid City Central Cobbler Cheerleader advisor. Philly received the Rapid City Meritorious Service Award and the Rapid City Achievement Award. Philly was also very active and passionate about bowling and golf. She was inducted into the Rapid City Bowling Hall of Fame and the South Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame, was the Senior Bowler of the Year and was a Past-President of the Rapid City Women's Bowling Association. Philly was a member of the Elks Lady Golf Association and was very proud of her hole in one. She was also active in the Rapid City Chapter of the Eastern Star and was a member of Canyon Lake Senior Center and loved to play duplicate bridge. She was a true and loyal Nebraska Cornhusker fan and loved all sports. She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren compete in athletics. Phyllis truly loved her family, friends and life itself. Survivors include her daughter, Babs (Lynn) Greff, Rapid City; her son, Jeff (Lynn Ann) Johnson, Fort Collins, Colo.; 6 grandchildren, Lindy (Brent) Hendrickson, Jacey (Pat) Moran, Koby (Steve) Afa, Dana Johnson, Laura Johnson and Ryan Johnson and 2 great-granddaughters, Monica Moran and Aniyah Hendrickson and 2 more on the way! Philly was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Duane in 2000. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at South Canyon Lutheran Church with Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Memorials may be directed to the Junior Bowling Scholarship Fund or the Elks Ladies Golf Association.
