RAPID CITY – Phyllis Virginia Merkel, 95, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025.
Phyllis was born on October 15, 1929, in Lemmon, South Dakota, to Charlie G. and Lois (Amoo) Duncan. A graduate of Lemmon High School, she went on to build a long and dedicated career, working with the Bureau of Reclamation in Lemmon, Gates Rubber Company in Denver, Colorado, and ultimately retiring after more than 33 years of service with the ASCS Office in McIntosh.
On October 14, 1950, Phyllis married the love of her life, George W. Merkel. Together they built a life rooted in love, family, and community.
Phyllis will be lovingly remembered for her kind heart, quick wit, and generous spirit. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend—always attentive, thoughtful, and loyal. Her warmth, humor, and welcoming presence touched the lives of many.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George; her parents; her brothers, Bill, Lee, and Jim; and two cherished grandsons, Cole and Blake.
She is survived by her son, Gary (Elanor) Merkel; daughter, Jayne (Doug) Miller; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Lutz and Ilene Duncan; ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2025, followed by funeral services at 11:30 a.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Phyllis's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
