BLACK HAWK | Phyllis Elaine Johnson was born on June 7, 1932, near Lake Preston to Arend and Helen Johnson. She was one of 14 children. She spent her childhood in Lake Preston and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1950.
Phyllis married James Rundell on March 15, 1953, in Lake Preston. Shortly after her wedding, they moved to Aberdeen, where she had her first son, Steven in 1953. In 1954, her second son, Alan was born in Huron. In 1958, Phyllis' third son, Mark, was born in Bismarck, ND. In 1960, Phyllis' first daughter, Cheryl was born in Rapid City. Phyllis completed her family in 1962 with the addition of her second daughter, Joan in Grafton, ND. In 1959, James and Phyllis settled down in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Phyllis dedicated her life to being a great wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking her famous recipes, quilting, attending activities at the church, camping, fishing, and weekly shopping trips with her family. Not only was Phyllis a devoted wife and mother, she also took every opportunity she could to enjoy spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Phyllis passed away on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, surrounded by her family at Hospice of the Hills.
Survivors include her husband, James Rundell of Black Hawk; sons, Steven (Vicki) Rundell of Pierce, NE, Alan (Marie) Rundell of Black Hawk, and Mark (Lori) Rundell of Black Hawk; daughter, Joan (Mark) Thompson of Piedmont; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Arend and Helen Johnson; her daughter, Cheryl Ramsdell; and several brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, at the Black Hawk Community Church, with Pastor Ken Fairbrother officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established to the Black Hawk Community Church.
