Obituary

Pia M. Wilkins passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025, at Avantara North Nursing Home in Rapid City.

Pia was born on December 24, 1946, in Switzerland, and was adopted by Dr. Lawrence and Shirley Massa of Sturgis, South Dakota.  She grew up in Sturgis, with her 6 brothers and sisters.  She eventually went on to attend the University of South Dakota in Vermilion, where she majored in Social Work.  After USD, she began studying Social Work at Smith College in Massachusetts. She eventually became an investigator for the Department of Social Services, Child Protection.

While home from college, Pia met the love of her life, Mort.  And the rest, as they say, is history.   They were married shortly after and began their family.

Aside from Mort, Pia loved to fish, the Denver Broncos, and her dogs.  There was nothing she loved more than to spend a day at the lake fishing with Mort by her side.

Surviving are her daughter, Rachel (Henry) Morales of Huron, South Dakota; her son, Matt (April Kyle) of Eagle River, Alaska; grandson Noah (Esther) Wilkins; granddaughter, Celia Wilkins, and great granddaughter, Natalie.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Joseph Massa, and her husband.

A memorial has been established to the Pennington County Drug and Alcohol program, as well as the Black Hills Humane Society.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

Burial will be held at a future date.
