Obituary

Rev. Preston C. Brown, 88, of Rapid City, died Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born on December 21, 1926 in Robinson, Illinois to Charles D. and Lillian (Condrey) Brown. He grew up in Robinson, graduating from Robinson High School and DePauw University. Preston was called to serve his country in May, 1951. After training as a medic at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, he returned to Illinois and eloped with Billie Johns prior to his deployment to Korea. Upon returning to the United States he finished his service at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. Preston completed his education at Garrett Biblical Institute. After serving many small parishes in Illinois he transferred to the South Dakota Conference with the United Methodist Church. He served in Frankfort, SD where they adopted Becky, Beresford, SD where they adopted Bruce, and then to Claremont, SD. He then served as the District Superintendent for the western district in Rapid City. After completing his term as superintendent, he then served in Williston, ND, Dickinson, ND and completing his service as a pastor in Sac City, IA. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1981. Upon retirement Preston and Billie moved to Rapid City. For many years, Preston served as a summer camp counselor at Lake Poinsett church camp. He was active in the Optimists and the Downtown Kiwanis clubs. He served many rewarding hours as a volunteer with Hospice of the Hills and was always active in church activities. Survivors include his daughter, Becky Ebel, Rapid City, his son, Bruce Brown and his wife, Tara Starr, Indianola, Iowa, 3 grandchildren, Cody, Zach and Alexa and numerous nieces and nephews. Preston was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Billie in 2006, 2 grandsons, Condrey and Cameron, 1984 and 2001 and a sister Sarah. A visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Monday, July 6, 2015 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A Memorial service will be at 11:00am on Tuesday, July 7 at the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church with Rev. Eric Grinager officiating. Inurnment of his ashes will be held at a future date at Mountain View Cemetery. Friends may direct memorials to either the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church or an online memorial to the Preston C. Brown Scholarship fund at the Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.
