Obituary

Randy Coffield, 73, of Black Hawk, SD passed away peacefully on August 4th, 2025 in Rapid City, SD. Randy was born on September 5th, 1951, to Royce and Betty Coffield in Rapid City, SD.

Randy lived in Hill City until age 5, before he and his family moved to Nemo where he completed elementary and junior high. His family then moved to Spearfish where he completed high school. After high school, he attended Black Hills State University, then moved to Rapid City and worked for Barber Transportation. After Barber Transportation's closing, he went to work for Heavy Constructors, where he spent the rest of his career as a foreman. He married Stephanie in 1985 and had one daughter, Jacqueline.

Randy spoke frequently of his wonderful childhood in Nemo with his family. He spent his childhood exploring the forests, creeks, and dams of the Nemo area. He could often be found in the woods with a sling shot, or on an innertube at a swimming hole or floating down the creek. He especially loved his time exploring the forest on Custer Peak with his sister Lynn, and later his younger brother Craig, while his dad Royce manned the fire lookout tower there for the National Forest Service.

Randy was very active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in his youth. He continued to be an avid outdoorsman as a young adult. He enjoyed many adventures backpacking, hunting, and fishing with friends and family in the Black Hills, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. He loved the Slim Buttes, where he hunted and helped on his grandfather's ranch.

Randy enjoyed landscape photography on his many camping and backpacking trips. He was a skilled leather worker hand crafting belts, holsters, and more. He also built furniture and was a jack of all trades handyman at home.

Randy had a great sense of humor and frequently alluded to a bit of innocent mischief he would cause at the schoolhouse in Nemo and at home for his mother Betty. His sense of humor lasted throughout his lifetime. He passed his sense of humor and love for the outdoors down to his daughter. He is remembered for his calm, quiet, kind, and hard-working demeanor. He was slow to anger, and quick to offer wisdom and fatherly advice.

He is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline (Michael) Phillips, and granddaughter Skylar of Rapid City, brother Craig Coffield of Spearfish, Sister Lynn (John) Kuhns of Aurora, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Royce and Betty Coffield.

Randy's family would like to thank all the nurses and additional staff involved in his care, and a very special thank you to Lois and staff at Stillwater Hospice for their exceptional care.

Funeral services will be held Saturday August 30th, at 10:00am at Canyon Lake Activity Center, 2900 Canyon Lake Dr, Rapid City, SD 57702.
