Obituary

RAPID CITY-Ray A. Miller, 88, died January 22, 2015 at home. Ray was born, November 8, 1926, in White Clay, Nebraska, son of James Mark Miller (Mark) and Viola A. Lyons. In June, 1949 he was married in New Jersey to Dorothy M. Mende of North Bergen, New Jersey. They located in South Dakota where, son, James Mark, was born in Belle Fourche, and three daughters, Karen Anne, Dawn Marie, and Annetta Rae, were born in Rapid City. As a youth, Dad had a number of work experiences. For nearly 25 years he worked at the Rapid City Journal as a photo technician, retiring in 1983. When Dad was 7 he lost his left hand and right thumb in an accident where he and his playmates were playing on unattended road machinery. Nevertheless, as an adult he attained a high school diploma, and worked to provide for his wife and raise their four children to adulthood. He had no "handicap" whatsoever so far as we could see. He did carpentry, hunted with a rifle, and maintained their homes. Dad was a self-taught man and well-read, knowledgeable about many subjects and with an excellent memory. He taught his children integrity, honesty, fairness, responsibility, kindness to animals, and an appreciation for nature. In 1989 after both Mom and Dad were retired, they moved to Warsaw, MO and spent 25 happy years there, returning to Rapid City three and one-half months before his death. Dad and Mom committed their lives to Christ in 1954 at the Open Bible Church in Rapid City. From that time on they served the Lord and taught their children to follow Jesus. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Nick Lale, baby sister, Marie Elizabeth, and daughter Annetta Rae Williams. Ray is survived by his wife, Dorothy, sister Grace Olson of Eden Prairie, MN, brother-in-law Arthur Mende, Jr. of South Carolina, son, James Mark Miller (Darlene) of Urbandale, IA, two daughters, Karen Anne Mauer (Greg) of Rapid City and Dawn Marie Hagan of Clinton, MO, son-in-law Brian Williams of Great Falls, MT, 8 grandchildren, Amy Roe (David) of Polk City, IA, Mindy Maddux (Martin) of Granger, IA, Mark Mauer of Rapid City, Sarah Shane (Wesley) of Kapaa, HI, Jason Hagan of Kansas City, MO, Nathan Hagan of Springfield, MO, Samantha Williams of Bremerton, WA, Jacob Williams of Great Falls, MT and 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
