RAPID CITY - Richard Allan "Jake" Jacobson, 79, Rapid City, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Pioneer Manor in Gillette, Wyo. He was born on April 23, 1931, in Deadwood to George and Loma Mae (Williams) Jacobson. He attended Roubaix Country School near Deadwood, for five years before the family moved into Deadwood. Jake attended school there and graduated from Deadwood High School in 1949. Upon graduation, Jake was employed with the Homestake Gold Mine, until he entered the U.S. Navy on Oct. 17, 1950. While in the Navy, Jake received the National Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the Republic of Korea Medal of Honor. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 13, 1954. After the military, Jake attended South Dakota State University in Brookings and received his Bachelor of Science degree. He became the manager of Broken Boot Gold Mine in Deadwood. He then moved to Rapid City and was employed with the South Dakota Department of Labor as a Veterans Employment Representative and Trainer until his retirement on April 30, 1981. Jake married Nancy (Holm) Stowsand in 1959, and then in 1974 he married Norma Bauman Lesmeister. After his retirement, he was employed with Jolly Lane Floral for eight years and was self-employed as a home maintenance repair man for several years. He is survived by two daughters, Susan (Frank) Latta and Kathy (Bill) Ashton, all of Gillette; a stepson, Steven (Deb) Jacobson, Boulder City, Nev.; two stepdaughters, Linda Jacobson, White Horse, and Linda Coker, Garland, Texas; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma in 2008; two sisters, Barbara and Doris; and a brother, Donald. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Peace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Lindenberg officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
