Obituary

Rev. Richard (Dick) L. Mefford, 81, Rapid City, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Dick was born January 19, 1928 in Ft. Collins, Colorado, the son of Joe & Helen Mefford. On May 20, 1952, he married Barbara Ruth Ramsey in Bauxite, Arkansas. Their marriage was blessed by a daughter, Michelle "Micki" and a son, Daniel. The Meffords served as missionaries (SBC) working with the Choctaw Indians in Philadelphia, Mississippi for six years and the Northern Cheyenne Indians, Lame Deer, Montana for 12 years. He graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, achieving a bachelors degree. He later graduated from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary with a second bachelors. In 1978 the Meffords moved to Box Elder where he served as pastor of Temple Baptist Church until 2002 when he retired. He also served as a hospital chaplain and as a volunteer chaplain for the Box Elder and Rapid City fire departments. Survivors include his daughter Micki Nenortas and her husband. Rev. Viktor, Birmingham, AL, his son, Rev. Dan Mefford and his wife, Stephanie, St. Joseph, MO; three grandchildren. Nisel Parsons, Clarksville, TN, Joshua Nenortas, Oxnard, CA and Dana Mefford, St. Joseph, MO; sisters Annice & Alice and brother Bob, and a special niece, Janie Mefford Shaklee, Brighton, CO. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a brother, Joe Mefford and an infant sister, Juanita. Services will be held Monday, November 30, 1:30 pm at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Rev. Keith McCraw officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Internment will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with honors by the Box Elder Fire Department, Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to Temple Baptist Church of Box Elder.
