IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard 'Rick'
Oxner
March 21, 1951 – September 18, 2024
Richard D. Oxner, 73, passed away Wednesday, September 18th, 2024, at his home in Black Hawk, SD. Rick was born March 21, 1951, to Dale and Shirley Oxner and was the youngest of four children. He was baptized and confirmed at the Congregational Church in Selby, SD. He spoke about many beloved memories growing up on the farm south of Selby with his family, including driving the grain truck home from Selby at the age of 12. On the way back to the farm, a state trooper noticed Rick driving and followed him all the way into the yard.
Rick completed first through eighth grade at Selby Elementary School and graduated from Selby High School in 1969. He participated in football and basketball for 4 years and track for 2 years, took part in Boys and Mixed Chorus and was a member of the Boys' Octet for two years. He was vice president of the junior class and student council representative for the senior class. His fondest memories were being a waiter for the junior/senior prom in his sophomore year and being attendant on the 1968 Homecoming Royalty. Rick's classmates fondly called him "pa".
On December 22, 1970, Rick was united in marriage with Brenda Perman. They moved to Rapid City in 1971. He and Brenda became the proud parents of Danielle and Matt.
After high school, he attended National College of Business, graduating with an Associate of Science Degree. Rick began his 50-year construction career learning the construction business with Diamond J. Enterprises in Rapid City. He later established his own business, Oxner Construction. Rick took much pride in his work and was known throughout Rapid City not only for his high-quality craftsmanship, but also for his friendly demeanor.
He was an active member of the community and served on numerous boards and committees including South Park United Church of Christ, a member of the Black Hills Home Builder Association and a member of the Elks Lodge and Golf Course, where he had his first "Hole-in-One" in 2006. Rick was also an avid bowler, a member of the Minute Man Bowling League and a sponsor for his team for many years. He bowled in the National Bowling Tournament, traveling to different states for several years as well. We are confident Rick has already scheduled a tee time at Heaven's finest golf course.
Rick never met a stranger. He was a genuine people person; the friendships he built throughout his life are countless. He opened his heart to everyone. Whenever you were out with him you could be sure that he would pause to chat with someone he knew. He will be remembered for his zest of life, laughter, and joy he brought to others' lives. He was a loving husband, father, and much-loved grandfather. The four bright stars of his life were his grandchildren, Payton, Eli, Taylor, and Kati. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities and could always be heard cheering in the baseball stands.
Rick is survived by his wife Brenda (Black Hawk, SD), daughter Danielle and grandchildren Taylor and Kati (Parker, CO), son Matt and wife Leah and grandchildren Payton and Eli (Rapid City, SD), his brother Jerry and wife Betty Oxner (Selby, SD), his sister Peg Mucci (Roseville, CA) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his father Dale Oxner, mother Shirley Oxner and brother Bill Oxner.
