Richard Wilcox (Dick to his friends) passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015 in Rapid City Regional Hospital. Dick was born in 1928 in Philadelphia, PA, to Alvin and Mary Wilcox and served in the U.S. Navy as a radar man. After he earned his B.A. in English and an M.A. in theatre arts from Temple University in Philadelphia, Dick joined the staff at the Black Hills Playhouse as scenic designer. He also enjoyed acting and singing in the productions. He was an assistant professor at Glassboro State College, NJ. and joined the theatre department at the University of South Dakota in 1965 where he was a director and scene designer. He married Melanie Simpson in 1966 and they had two sons: Blake and Geoffrey. The family returned to NJ where Dick again taught at Glassboro. Later he worked for Gateway Regional Theater, NJ. Dick's artistic talent was outstanding. Besides directing numerous plays, he designed, built and painted scenery; decorated sets; created props and costumes. His paintings and other artwork grace the Wilcox home and the homes of friends. Dick is survived by his wife, Melanie; sons Blake, Coatesville, PA; Geoffrey (Bobbi), Henderson, NV; two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Alvin, Francis, Lawrence and Leo; and by his sisters Charlotte Nairne and Genevieve Stanton. A family celebration of Dick's life will be held at a later date.
