Rapid City - Rita Marie Kellar, 88, died, Saturday, September 12, 2009, Clarkson Mountain View Healthcare Facility. Rita was born and raised in Boston, MA, "in the shadow of Bunker Hill," as she liked to say. She held a life-long love for Boston and Rockport, MA. Rita proudly served in the U.S. Navy and traveled extensively during World War II. She met her husband, Don Kellar, while in the Navy in San Francisco and they were united in marriage in 1948 Survivors include her husband Don Kellar, Rapid City; five children, Ann, Renton, WA, Mary (Gerald Butz), Rapid City, Joe (Linda), Mukilteo, WA, Tom (Teresa), Rapid City and Jim (Annie), Valentine, Australia; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Rita was a member of, and served on the Altar Society at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and later was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church. In addition to her service in the Navy, Rita worked for St. John's Hospital, the Boy Scouts of America, the IPS and the South Dakota Department of Revenue. After retirement she was a volunteer at Hospice of the Hills. The family is especially grateful for Hospice's and Clarkson Mountain View's loving care of Rita in her final weeks. A reception will be held from 6 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with a Christian wake service and rosary recitation following at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Black Hills National Cemetery with Rev. William Zandri officiating and military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the SD Army National Guard. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Hills.
