Obituary

Robert Lee Achbach Jr. died peacefully in the Catholic faith and in the company of his loving family on June 30, 2024.

Born May 12, 1945 to Robert and Virginia Achbach in Dayton, OH, Robert was the eldest of three children.

He graduated from La Puente High School, California, in 1963.

He enlisted in the Air Force on September 30, 1965, serving in the Azores.

He was baptized on May 27, 1971, and married Sheila Evens on June 11, 1971.  Together, they had three children.

In 1978, Robert and Sheila moved to Rapid City, where Robert received his confirmation and Holy Communion.  It was a welcome move for them as they both enjoyed the outdoor life of the Black Hills, with many weekends spent camping and fishing.  Robert worked as a warehouseman at Nash Finch for nearly thirty years.

He is remembered by his children as a very hard worker, sometimes taking a second job to provide for his family with never a complaint.  Dad was always the support for mom getting the family to church on Sundays, and as his kids got older, his own Catholic faith began to take on deeper roots.  He was an active member of the St. Therese Knights of Columbus for many years and truly enjoyed their fraternity.

Survivors include his sons Bryan (Joanne) Achbach, and Rev. Kevin Achbach; daughter, Cheryl (Ryan) Micke; grandchildren Katherine, Jacob, Megan, and Daniel; sibling Marilyn McGee.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Sheila; parents, Robert Sr and Virginia; brother, James.

Visitation will be at 4pm on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church with a Vigil Service at 5pm.

Funeral Mass will be offered at 10am on Friday, July 5, 2024, at St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church with a brunch to follow in the hall.  Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2024 at Black Hills National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Robert's family would appreciate mass intentions and prayers to be offered for the repose of his soul.
