Obituary

RAPID CITY- Robert D. "Bob" Schulz, 87, died Friday, March 6, 2015 at Clarkson Health Care. Bob was born on March 11, 1927 near Bruce, South Dakota. His parents, Henry and Ruth Schulz, owned Schulzs' Drug Store in Bruce, and Bob often spoke fondly of his small town upbringing. He enlisted in the Navy during his senior year of high school and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was present at Operation Crossroads in the Marshall Islands on July 1, 1946. Following his naval service he enrolled at South Dakota State College in Brookings, where he met Lois Maxine Loen, also a student at the college. They were married on June 12, 1948 at Belleview Lutheran Church near Howard, SD. In March of 1950, Bob graduated from SD State College with degrees in Journalism and Political Science. His first job was as a caseworker for the State Dept. of Social Services in Watertown. His career included moves to Britton and Pierre before settling permanently in Rapid City in 1956. He retired as District Manager after 39 years of service to the State of South Dakota. During retirement, he enjoyed wintering in Arizona with Lois for several years. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and reading extensively about World War II. He spent many summer evenings with friends enjoying Legion baseball. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Lois, Rapid City; daughters: Annette (Terry) Johnson, Omaha, NE; Diane Simpson, St. Cloud, MN; son, Keith Schulz, Rapid City; grandsons: Brian (Andrea) Johnson, Erie, CO; Michael Simpson, Putney, VT; Matthew Simpson, Kilgore, TX; granddaughter, Kristin (Jim) Schultz, Chicago, IL; and great grandchildren: Sophia and Nate Johnson, Erie, CO; and Landon Schultz, Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Henry Jr. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors rendered by the VFW Post 1273 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Bruce Cemetery Association or the Disabled American Veterans.
