Obituary

Robert A. Carrothers of Rapid City SD transitioned to be with his Lord on April 7, 2025, at the Ft. Meade Medical Center Hospice facility surrounded by friends and loving caregivers.

Robert was born August 9, 1940, in Murphysboro, Illinois where he grew up and attended Murphysboro Township High School. Following graduation, he attended Southern Illinois University where he received a welding certificate.

Robert served in the US Army from April 22, 1963 to April 13, 1966 which included a tour in Vietnam.  During the Vietnam conflict, Robert was exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in a 100% VA disability rating later in his life.

Robert was a hard worker, working in a sawmill, a graphics arts facility where he produced magazines and comic books, and in later years, driving the Rapid Ride bus in Rapid City.

Robert had a great sense of humor, and all his friends enjoyed his early morning emails spiked with puns, jokes, and inspirational messages.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and on good weather days would ride his electric wheelchair the one mile from his apartment to the church for the 9:00 am service. He kept track of birthdays and brought cupcakes and candy for the church staff and the kids who enjoyed his presence. His ever-present smile will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Robert was pre-deceased by his parents Robert and Lillian Carrothers, and a brother Charles Gavin Carrothers who died shortly after birth.  He is survived by loving cousins, close friends, and an extended family in Murphysboro, Illinois.  Robert will be laid to rest with his parents and brother in Murphysboro at a later date.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00a.m on Friday, 11 April 2025, at the First United Methodist Church, 629 Kansas City St, Rapid City SD.  Robert's desire was that instead of flowers, any memorial gifts be sent to the church.
