Obituary

Robert N. Coon, 95, of Rapid City, died Monday, April 25 at Clarkson Health Care.

Robert was born May 2, 1920 in Madison, SD. He was adopted by Claude and Mabel (Pennington) Coon. When Mabel passed away, Claude married Beva Pilling. The family moved to Pierre where Robert grew up and graduated from Pierre High School. He led the Pierre Governor Junior League Baseball Team to the state championship in 1935.

Bob received a degree in business from South Dakota State University participating in sports throughout his college years.

He enlisted in the National Guard and was stationed in Spokane, WA where he met Betty Irving and they were married in 1943. Bob was deployed to Italy during WWII to serve with the Army Air Corps 463rd Bomb Group in the 15th Air Force receiving various medals.

After his discharge, Bob moved Betty to Rapid City where they lived the rest of their lives.

Bob worked for the SD Department of Revenue for 25 years.

He was an active Mason, Shriner and a member of the Kiwanis.

In his retirement, he was a crossing guard, playground supervisor and substitute grandfather for the children at Meadowbrook School.

Bob was a member of the Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center, participating in various charity walks.

Bob and Betty attended St Andrews' Episcopal Church, taking part in the members that had a vision in the development of the church in 1957.

Bob was a "people person", a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved going to McDonalds for coffee with his friends. Bob was known for his great sense of humor.

Survivors who are thankful for sharing in his life include his daughter, Claudia Douglas, Rapid City, his son in law, Bob King, Rapid City, grandsons; Tyler (Tara) King, Travis (Angie) King, greatgrandchildren; Marisa, Connor and Megan King, and Kylee, Kaitlyn and Karley King and a great great grandson, Braxton King, a step sister, Vail Oberski, of Amarillo, TX, the Tony (Debra) Douglas family and the Triny (Sonya) Douglas Family.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty and daughter, Kathy King and son in law, Tom Douglas.

In lieu of flowers, Bob's request is that memorials be sent to the Sioux Falls Children's Home, 801 N. Sycamore Ave., Sioux Falls, SD, 57110, the place of his adoption.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, April 29, 2016 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Fr. Tom Campbell officiating. Inurnment, with military honors will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
