Obituary

Dr. Robert (Bob) K. Johnson, 83, passed away on October 9, 2014, at West Hills Village in Rapid City. Bob was born March 6, 1931 in Dickinson, ND, to Hartwell and Cora (Kabrud) Johnson. He was educated in the Dickinson Public Schools. He graduated from Carleton College and the University of Rochester Medical School. He completed a one year internship at Minneapolis General Hospital followed by a three year residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa. While in Minneapolis, Bob met Mary Johnson and the couple married in 1957. After completing his training, they moved Sitka, Alaska, where Bob served two years in the Indian Health Service. They moved to Rapid City in 1963. He began his career in Rapid City at the Rapid City Medical Center. In 1969, he and his good friends started the Internal Medicine Group at The Park Side Professional Building. He spent the last year of his practice at University of Physicians and retired in 1996. Bob was active in the American College of Physicians and held many positions both regionally and nationally. He was on the board of directors during the planning stages for the Rapid City Regional Hospital. He later held many positions for the medical staff at the hospital. Bob was also on the staff of the University of South Dakota, teaching medical students for the West River campus. However, the focus of his life was the care of his patients, his relationships with his colleagues, and, most of all, spending time with his family and friends. During his retirement, Bob volunteered for the Big Brothers Big Sisters and at The Corner Stone Mission, participated in the Senior Olympics, hiked in the Black Hills, puttered in his yard and workshop and spent many blissful hours at the hardware store. He could also be found playing basketball in the driveway with his grandchildren and the neighborhood kids. He is survived by his wife Mary, his three sons, Peter (Sue) Johnson, of North Platte, NE, David (Francisca Chambus) Johnson, of Aurora, CO, and Ted (Teresa) Johnson, of San Diego, CA, his daughter Nancy (Patrick) O'Rourke of Hockwold, England, his brother Richard Johnson of Florence, MT, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Gee. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 15, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, October 16th, at South Canyon Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bruce Thalacker and the Rev. Cassandra Lamb officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Big Brothers\Big Sisters, West Hills Foundation, or South Canyon Lutheran Church choir.
