Rapid City - Robert "Bob" F. Martin, 79, Rapid City, died at his home on Sunday, March 3, 2013. Bob was born October 7, 1933 to John Frank and Leola Marguarete [Converse] Martin at Watertown, SD. He was raised four years in Watertown, nine years in Minneapolis, MN and five years in Estelline, SD. He graduated from Estelline High School in 1952. Robert served four years in the United States Navy; of which three years on the USS Whitley AKA 91 and on the USS San Pablo AGS 30 for one year. He also served eight and half years in the South Dakota National Guard with the 15th Engineers Battalion, 111th MP Battalion, and A Battery 147th Artillery. He married Kay F. Carnahan on December 22, 1955 at Estelline, SD. They shared 57 years together. Bob received a B.S. degree in secondary education from General Beadle College [Dakota State University] in 1960 and he taught in the Madison school system from 1960-1965. In 1965 he began a 33 year career in the rural electric area where he started at KEM Electric in Linton, ND. From 1970-90 he worked for the East River Electric Power Cooperative in Madison and from 1991-99 he completed his career as General Manager of Rushmore Electric Power Cooperative in Rapid City. He served in numerous capacities at the churches he belonged to and in community organizations where the family lived. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge #1187 of Rapid City, American Legion Post #25 of Madison and Masonic Lodge #17 of Madison. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and a golf group he considered a special group after retirement, enjoyed his breakfast group five days a week, his men's bible study group breakfast on Saturday's at First Presbyterian Church, lunches with fellow retired rural electric managers, and cooking for family and friends. Survivors include his wife: Kay Martin of Rapid City; two daughters: Penny [Kevin] Haller of Chicago, IL and their children Ryan Huck and step-granddaughter Mary Haller and Shari [Mitch] Martin of St. Louis, MO and their daughter Grace; two sons: Shawn [Jill] Martin of Chester, SD and their children Kayla and Brett and Jay [Cathy] Martin of Madison, SD and their children Miranda and Bo; and one brother: LeRoy [Shirley] Martin of Victorville, CA. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and a special Aunt Vera. Memorial services will be 10:30 am, Thursday, March 7, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, 710 Kansas City St, with Rev. Jeff Kintner officiating. Inurnment will take place at the Hillcrest Cemetery at Estelline, SD at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the building fund at the First Presbyterian Church.
