Rapid City - Robert E. Schwandt, 78, Rapid City, died Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxillary Hospice House. Robert was born on March 18, 1932, in Helga Township, Minnesota to Robert and Violet (Gillett) Schwandt. He graduated from high school in Missoula, MT and then attended the University of Montana and engineering school. He joined the Air Force and served from 1952-1955 and for 10 years in the Reserves. Robert was united in marriage to Kay Sauer in Bemidji, MN on August 5, 1956. They made their home in Rapid City in 1959. Robert was employed for 35 years with Northwestern Bell and retired in 1992. Survivors include his wife, Kay Schwandt, Rapid city; a son, James (Dawn) Schwandt, Rapid City; a daughter, Lori (Greg) King, Sioux Falls, 8 grandchildren, Kari, Christopher, Paul, Andrea, Ryan, Michael, Lucas and Sophie; 3 brothers, Dale Schwandt and Wayne Schwandt, both of Washington State and Doug Schwandt, of California and a sister, Millie Schwandt, of Oregon He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Christopher Schwandt and Ken Fruik. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 18, from 5 until 7 p.m., at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Rev. Joshua Jones officiating. Burial with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army Reserve National Guard, will be at Black Hills National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed towards Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House.
