Obituary

Robert Merle "Bob" Singer, 93, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, in Simi Valley, California. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, veteran, and friend, Robert lived a life marked by service, integrity, and deep commitment to those around him.

Born on September 22, 1931, in Deadwood, South Dakota, Robert grew up in the rugged beauty of the Black Hills. He began his education at Cleghorn Canyon Elementary School and later attended Rapid City High School. His passion for learning and leadership led him to Black Hills State University, where he earned his teaching credentials. He would go on to further his education with a Master's Degree in School Administration from the University of Redlands in California.

Robert's life was one of adventure and purpose. After completing his studies at Black Hills State, he embarked on a journey that would shape both his career and family life. Alongside his beloved wife Audrey and their young son Alan (Jay), Robert moved to Guam to begin his teaching career. Their two-year stay in the tropics was the beginning of a lifelong dedication to education.

Upon returning stateside, the Singer family settled in San Bernardino, California. There, Robert dedicated over three decades to public education as a teacher, coach, and school administrator within the San Bernardino City Unified School District. His influence extended far beyond the classroom—he mentored students on the field as well as in life. He retired in 1995 after more than 30 years of service that left an indelible mark on countless lives.

Before his career in education began, Robert served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. As a squad leader and staff sergeant with S2 intelligence responsibilities, he demonstrated exceptional bravery and leadership under fire. For his valor in combat, he was awarded the Silver Star—one of the nation's highest military honors.

Robert's love for sports began early; he played multiple sports throughout high school and college. That passion continued into his professional life as he coached young athletes at various schools during his tenure as an educator. In retirement, he remained active—golfing across Southern California and back home in the Black Hills or casting a line into Slate Creek where he found peace and joy.

A skilled woodworker with an eye for detail and craftsmanship, Robert created many beautiful pieces over the years that now grace the homes of friends and family—a lasting testament to both his talent and generosity.

Above all else, Robert cherished time with his family. He is survived by Audrey, his loving wife of 72 years; son Alan (Jay) Singer and wife Alannah; daughters Jane Singer and Barbara Lemoine; grandsons John Singer and Aiden Lemoine; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who were touched by his warmth and wisdom.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Alyce Singer and brothers Richard (Dick) Singer and Rexford (Doug) Singer.

Robert will be remembered not only for what he accomplished but for who he was—a man who placed great importance on family and friendship; who led by example with quiet strength; who showed others how to live honorably through every chapter of life.
