Robert E. Whalin, 90, of Rapid City, died Saturday, January 16, 2016.
He was born on December 14, 1925, in Edgemont, South Dakota to Eugene and Grace (Koller) Whalin. He grew up in Belle Fourche and graduated from Belle Fourche High School. He served in the US Marines during World War II in the South Pacific.
After his service, he returned to Belle Fourche and worked as a mechanic and gas truck driver. He was united in marriage to Nina Enberg in Belle Fourche on August 9, 1949.
The family moved to Rapid City and he was owner of Ron*Robin Service Stations. He also was a mechanic and drove bus for Gray Lines.
He was an avid ourdoorsman and liked horseback riding, motorcycling, fishing, hunting and tinkering in the garage.
Survivors include his wife Nina; 4 children, Robin (Gay) Whalin, Rock Whalin, Rita Ewing and Roxanna Barloon, all of Rapid City; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard Patrick Whalin, a granddaughter, Debbie Kutzke and a grandson, Richard Ewing, Jr.
A visitation will be held from 3:00pm until 5:00pm on Monday, January 25 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 7 pm.
Christian funeral mass will be offered at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with Fr. Jonathan Dillon presiding.
Interment with military honors will be at 1:00 pm at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
