Robert Fredrick Zeller, 91, of Rapid City and formerly of DeSmet died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Center in DeSmet.
He was born December 11, 1924 in Clay Center, Kansas to F.W. "Bill" and Nellie Zeller. He was 12 years old when he began farm work for room and board. He graduated from Huron High School in 1942. Following graduation he worked in the bee business for his sister's family, the Folslands. In 1944, he was drafted into the Army. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to Oldham to work in the bee business.
He married Elsa "Ruth" Albrecht in September 1949. He worked for the Albrecht Farms. He also began work as a part-time postal clerk, later becoming head clerk. At the age of 60, he became a postmaster. He retired following 20 years of service. In August of 2005, he and Ruth moved to Rapid City.
Bob was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He also served as school board president and served on the Good Samaritan Center Board.
He enjoyed dancing, planting trees, ice fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife: Ruth of Rapid City; two daughters: Roberta [Craig] Walz of Custer and Rebecca [Kurt] Ronning of Rapid City; one son: Richard [Barb] Zeller of Lake Norden; one brother: Richard "Dick" Zeller of Great Falls, Montana; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
