Obituary

Rodney "Rod" Swaney, 68, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at the Banner Fort Collins Medical Center in Fort Collins, CO.

Rodney Elton Swaney, born on April 10, 1955, in Huron, SD, to Kenneth and Doris Swaney. His journey began in Huron but took root in Rapid City, SD, where his family settled when Rod was just five years old. Growing up, he thrived within the community, attending schools in the Rapid City Area, graduating from Stevens High School.

Rod moved to Seattle in 1980, where he immersed himself in the vibrant city life.  Yet, despite the allure of Seattle, Rod's heart always remained tethered to the Black Hills. In 1990, he made the heartfelt choice to return to his beloved home. There, he dedicated himself to the family business and rose to become a valued co-owner. Rod's expertise and love for machines were unparalleled; he possessed an extensive knowledge of truck and car accessories. His passion extended to automobiles, pickup trucks, airplanes, and all things motor-driven.

Rod's life was intertwined with his deep-seated love for music and his unwavering devotion to his furry companions. A proud member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, he found joy in participating in the church choir, forming enduring friendships with fellow choir members. Rod's passion for music was evident in the countless hours he poured into his collection of music CDs. His vast collection of music CDs mirrored his eclectic taste, and conversations with Rod often transformed into engaging exchanges about bands and music trivia; these conversations often culminated in one of his cherished "mixed" music CDs generously gifted to friends and family.

Rod's love for four-legged friends was unparalleled, bringing him immense joy and companionship throughout his life. His pets were not just animals but beloved members of his family, with a Scottish Terrier named Iggy being his recent cherished companion. Together, Rod and Iggy embarked on numerous RV trips, traversing the country to explore air shows, car exhibitions, reunions with extended family, and memorable outings to Angostura Reservoir. These boating adventures with friends created lasting memories.

Rod's legacy lives on through the joy he brought to those around him, his unwavering love for music, and his boundless affection for his furry companions. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rod is survived by his loving mother, Doris Swaney of Rapid City, SD; his siblings, Phil (Stacie) Swaney of Keystone, SD, and Brenda (Mick) Patzlaff of Custer, SD; his nieces, Miranda (Colby) Larson and Mirissa Swaney, both of Rapid City, SD, and Tyra (Curt) Jons of Sioux Falls, SD; and his nephew Nolan Patzlaff of Anchorage, Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Swaney.
