Roger Gene
Bettcher
September 4, 1942 – March 22, 2026
On March 22, 2026, Roger Gene Bettcher (83) went home to be with the Lord. Roger died peacefully at his home after a long illness. He was born in Valentine, Nebraska on September 4, 1942.
Roger led a full and enriched life. He was an entrepreneur from an early age, successful in all things he tried, whether working with other people and companies or with his own businesses.
He worked many years at the Homestake Gold mine in Lead, South Dakota. During these times, he began to pursue his true love of becoming a successful artist. His specialty was all kinds of wildlife, usually scattered among Black Hills scenes. He travelled across the United States working successfully in Insurance, car sales, commercial painting and any other ventures that were needed to support his growing family. Eventually, while still honing his artistic skills, he started his own business as a commercial painter.
His life was certainly not all about work. Roger was a consummate outdoorsman, He loved to hunt, fish, and camp as much as possible, most always with his family. He loved all kinds of cars, as long as they were fast. He even raced his own stock cars for a time. There was never a car fast enough or loud enough for him. He also loved motorcycles and enjoyed touring the Black Hills on every weekend that he could get away.
But, most importantly, he loved the Lord and his children. His kids were constantly aware of his practical jokes. Terri, Tony and Troy grew up best friends, all the while trying to outdo Dad with his continuous pranks or hide when it was time for him to retaliate for their failed attempts at "getting" him.
Roger met his current wife, Myrtle, in 1990, and they were married in April, 2000 in Mesa, AZ. They lived together in Casper, WY and eventually settled in the Rapid City area.
Roger will also be remembered as never meeting a stranger during his lifetime. He always opened his hand, and often his home, to those in need.
Roger is survived by his wife of 26 years, Myrtle Bettcher of Rapid City, SD, his sister, Carol Kauer of Hill City, SD, his three children; Terri Minchow of Casper, WY, Toni Gerdom of Owasso, OK, and Troy Bettcher of Casper, WY, along with his stepson, Chad Riddle of Rapid City, SD. Roger leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
