Ron Kroeger, 74, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2023 at his home.  Ron was born on October 6, 1948, to Vernon and Irma (Schultz) Kroeger in Watertown, SD.  He was the oldest of five children which included 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.  His family lived in various locations prior to settling in Rapid City in 1960, where he attended North Junior High and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1966.  After what some would call a "spirited" childhood, Ron enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967.  He completed basic training in San Diego, CA and during the Vietnam era served in numerous locations including aboard the USS Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in January 1971.

When he returned home after the service Ron attended National College then began working in the finance business at Southwestern Investment Corporation.  During the time he was attending school he met his future wife Nancy (Remschel) then married on August 1, 1975. They welcomed their first child Doug in 1978 followed by their daughter Kristin (Shroyer) in 1981.

Ron worked in financial institutions until 1987 when he switched careers and began as a business partner at Aqua Pure Water and AP Vending. Following the water business Ron joined the Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group and sold real estate until 2011. During this period he received numerous awards and recognitions, one of which included the South Dakota Realtor of the Year.

While working in the water business, he became interested in public service and was appointed to the Rapid City Planning Commission. Later he was elected to 7 consecutive terms on the Rapid City Council ending in 2011.  He served as president of the council for multiple terms as well as several committees and boards.  His vision and understanding of city needs helped lead the way to various progressive projects and partnerships.  Ron's colleagues recognized and remembered him as always exhibiting unwavering professionalism, humility, and kindness.

Ron enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's many activities. While his kids were growing up, he was an active coach and their biggest fan. His grandchildren were the delight of his life in the past 12 years while he courageously battled against the effects of debilitating health issues.

In addition to public service Ron had many passions which included hunting, fishing, landscaping, his corvette, drives up in the hills, and the many spaniels along the way.

Ron is proceeded in death by his parents Vernon and Irma Kroeger.  He is survived by his wife of 48 years Nancy, his son Doug (Nicki), his daughter Kristin (Josh), four grandchildren Kelsi, Kole, Taryn, Gage, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and several nieces and nephews. Words cannot begin to express the sorrow of his passing, but we find peace knowing he is now at home with the Lord.

The family would like to express upmost gratitude to the friends and health care professionals who have helped Ron through his good days and darkest times. We would also like to especially thank Marv Kelsey for being his strong "right side" for over a decade.

Ron's subtle humor, leadership and the ability to always see the best in others including his wife, children, and grandchildren will be forever missed, and forever in our hearts.

Visitation will be from 4:00pm – 6:00pm on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be at 10:00am Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Rev Bryan Meadows officiating.  Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery with full military honors.
