RAPID CITY, SD--Ronald D. 'Smitty' Smith, 79, former Lead resident, died in Rapid City on Friday, May 1, 2009. He was born in Rolette, ND to Osben and Thelma (Gable) Smith on August 24, 1929. He grew up in near Rollette and graduated from high school there in 1947. He married Cecilia Hager. Smitty worked as a heavy equipment operator at Homestake Mining Company for 40 years. He was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Lead, #703 Knights of Columbus in Lead and Blessed Sacrament Parish in Rapid City Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Smith, Rapid City; seven children, David (Sharon) Smith, Faith, SD, Michael (Geraldine) Smith, Olean, NY, Geraldine Smith, Rapid City, Pamela (Tom) Damveld, Wayland, MI, Karen (John) Armock, Byron Center, MI, Keith (Cindy) Smith, Spearfish and Janette (Todd) Shippy, Colome, SD; a brother, William F. Smith, Cottage Grove, MN; 14 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 10 step-great-grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Gloreen Hamel Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. A Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rapid City with Fr. Dan Juelfs presiding. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City. Memorials have been established for the Black Hills Childrens Home and Hospice of the Hills.
