Obituary

RAPID CITY Roy E. Monnot Sr., 77 Rapid City, died, Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Rapid City Regional Auxiliary Hospice House. Roy was born July, 15 1934 in Canton, Ohio to Glenn and Rhea (Mullen) Monnot. Roy had a distinguished military career having joined the United States Air Force in Louisville, Ohio in January 1952. He served during the Korean War and Vietnam War, having done tours in Vietnam from stations in both Japan and the Philippine Islands. Roy received many awards during his Service including the 2 NDSMs, 3 AFGCMs and 4 AFLSAs. Roy Honorably retired from active duty in January of 1972 from Ellsworth Air Force Base. Roy continued to serve our Country as a civilian working for the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMO) for 25 years before retiring. For Roy, retirement was not the end of his Patriotism. He was affiliated and active with many military organizations including American Legion Post 315, The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA), The VFW, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the Fraternal Order of Police. Roy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Irma Jean Monnot of Rapid City, SD; his seven children, Roy E. Monnot Jr. and his wife Audrey Monnot of Rapid City, SD, Lois Ann Smith and her husband Dale Smith of Stafford, VA, James Winzel Driver of Rapid City, SD, Michael Dewey Driver of Houma, LA, Vicky Jean Driver of Rapid City, Cynthia Pauline and her husband Keith Tanoos of Wellington, NV, and Jerald Wade Driver and his wife Patty Driver of Rapid City, SD; his fourteen grandchildren, Richard Marnette, Tadd, Marnette, Jean Marie Scott, Michael Rickard, Aimee Bergeron, Byron Morgan Jr., Desiree Monnot, Melissa Smith, Mindy Beaver, Joshua Driver, Kevin Smith, Collin Van Dam, Jessica Driver, and Brandi Monnot; and eight great-grandchildren, Kholten, Shay, Brooke, Bridgette, Travis, Blake, Christopher and Summer Sky. Roy is also survived by his four brothers, Louis Monnot, Ray Monnot, Edward Monnot, and Kenny Monnot all of Canton, OH; and two sisters, Dorothy Kasper of Bania, FL and Ruth McQuaid of Canton, OH. Roy is preceded in death by his Parents Glenn and Rhea and his sister Esther Schwab. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Christian Wake service Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Janusz Korban presiding. Burial, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Reception will follow at American Legion Post 315 - 730 Briggs St., Box Elder. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Rapid City Regional Auxiliary Hospice House in Roys name.
