Rubana Pearl Phillips, 92, died Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the Oaklawn Nursing Home in Mankato, Minnesota. Rubana was born July 16, 1922, to LeRoy and Dolores (Prickett) Howey; she was the oldest of six children. Growing up on a ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Rubana learned to be a very strong woman, a trait she carried with her for the rest of her life. She attended a country school and then graduated from high school in Rapid City, SD. Rubana married Russell Phillips on June 14, 1941, in Chadron, Neb. She gave birth to and raised their only daughter, Yvonne, while Russell served our country during WWII. Rubana was a bank teller with US Bank for over 30 years. She was always on the run; she was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rapid City, an active member of the American Business Women's Association and a volunteer with the local hospital. She was a talented seamstress, having also created many beautiful crafts throughout the years. Most important to Rubana was her family. She leaves a legacy of four generations of strong, independent women and men. Rubana passed away Nov. 13, 2014, at Oaklawn Health Care Center in Mankato, Minn. She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne (Tom) Shields of North Mankato; granddaughters Carla (Robert) Diesch of Rapidan, Sheila (Virgil) Becker of Long Prairie, Vicki (Jim) Boruff of Belle Plaine, and Beth Shields of North Mankato; many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sister Becky (Gene) Barker of Hill City, S.D.; sister-in-law Beverly Howey of Deerfield, S.D., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, in 1967; her parents; two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. CST Monday, Nov. 17, at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary. Visitation will be for one hour before services. Burial will be at 2 p.m. MST Thursday, Nov. 20, at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, S.D. Visitation will be at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home one hour prior to graveside services.
