PIEDMONT – Ruby Mae Nissen was born June 6, 1933, in Beresford, SD to Raymond and Julia Chaussee.  Ruby passed away at the age of 89 on May 20, 2023, at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital after a short battle with cancer.

Ruby married Bill Nissen of Orient, SD on March 21, 1953.  Together they raised four children; three boys; Douglas, John and Gordon and one daughter, Carolyn.

Bill and Ruby moved with the construction industry for a few years before settling in Piedmont, SD in 1960.  She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Piedmont and was an avid seamstress.  She made and mended many items through the years and created amazing quilts out of old blue jeans.

She is survived by her children; Douglas Nissen (Cathy), John Nissen (Laurie), Gordon Nissen (Sandy) and Carolyn Smith (Frank) all of Piedmont.

Ruby was a loving grandmother to; Andrew Nissen (Caitlin), Jacob Nissen (Isabel), Daniel Nissen, Ashley Fraser (Pat), Amanda Pratt (Neil), Stephanie Nissen, Matthew Nissen and Casey Smith (Kenzie) as well as a great-grandmother to; Roland, Rheanna, Libby, Masey, Phoebe, Waylon, Jayden, Riley, Landon, Kaden, Logan, Austin and Emmitt.

She is also survived by her brother, Marlin Chaussee (Neva) and sister, Lavonne Anderson.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill Nissen, her brother, Donny Chaussee and her great-granddaughter, Emily.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
