Obituary

RAPID CITY - Ruby E. Schienbein, 95, Rapid City, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Clarkson Mountain View Health Care Facility. Ruby was born March 11, 1915, along with her twin sister Garnet, to William and Anna Amanda (Anderson) Schmele, on their homestead ranch in Newell, South Dakota. She attended Horse Creek School and was a teenager during the Great Depression. She and her sister tended to the animals on the ranch and cooked for the hired hands. That is how she came to meet her future husband, John A. Schienbein, who was a foreman on the ranch. The twins graduated from Newell High School in 1933. Ruby went on to attend Greenes Beauty School in Rapid City. She graduated in 1939 and worked as a beautician at Beas Beauty Shop in Sturgis. During World War II, she went to Denver to work supporting the war effort. Ruby and John were married in Belle Fourche, SD, on July 10, 1955, and bought a home in Rapid City. From their marriage, an only child, Jona, was born. When Jona was in grade school, Ruby served as Room Mother for her classes, baking treats for all special occasions. She loved to bake and cook and was always concerned as to whether everyone was getting enough to eat. She had many good friends around the neighborhood. Ruby will always be remembered for her positive attitude, sense of humor, and special laugh and smile. She was an active member of South Canyon Extension Club, a neighborhood Court Whist card club, and a circle Bible study group at South Canyon Lutheran Church. Ruby and Garnet enjoyed working on crafts together. Ruby continued to work as a beautician out of her home for her neighbors for many years. When Johns health was failing from Parkinsons disease and he entered Clarkson Mt. View Healthcare Facility, Ruby would take Dial-a-Ride to Clarkson every weekday to spend the day with him and help him with his meals. After his death, when her health began to decline, she went to live at Theres a Hart Assisted Living and later at Clarkson Mt. View. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Howard Schmele; and sisters, Luverne (Henry) Noziska and Garnet Schmele. Survivors include a daughter, Jona Hagen; two granddaughters, Jacque Hagen and Amanda Alvarez; and three great-grandsons, Antonio, Tacoma, and Dane Alvarez. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, January 30, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home as well as an hour before funeral services scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, January 31, at South Canyon Lutheran Church with Pastor Bruce Thalacker officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to South Canyon Lutheran Church or Clarkson Mt. View Healthcare.
