RAPID CITY - Russel D. "Steve" Stevens, 93, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Russel D. Stevens was born in Huron, the son of Michael E. Stevens and Nellie (Ford) Stevens, the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Huron High School and later attended Minnesota Business College at Mankato. In 1940 he married Ellen M. Bucher in Huron. That marriage continued until her death in 1989. He met and married Lucille A. Gallo in 1990. Russel's career as livestock commission salesman brought him to Parsons, Kan., Texarkana, Texas and Collinsville, Ill. He worked for and later was partner in the National Livestock Commission Firm from 1945 to 1977. He was elected to and served for many years on the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Livestock Exchange, serving and chairing on numerous committees. His cattle customers numbered in the hundreds throughout Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Kansas. He enjoyed retirement in Heber Springs, Ark., and later in Rapid City. Survivors include his daughter, Kathleen A. Stevens, Concord, Calif.; stepdaughter Maybelle Giesler, Rapid City; and a sister, Myrtle Ulman, Spirit Lake, Iowa. He will also be missed by stepgranddaughter, Mattie Ryman and family, all of Rapid City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Michael and Wilfred; three sisters, Elva Martin, Llewelyn Seeman and Madge Johnson; his wife, Ellen; and his wife, Lucille. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with services following at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Zandri officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. At the preference of family and friends, memorial contributions may be made for the appreciation of the nurses and staff at West Hills Village South.
