Obituary

Memorial obituary Rapid City Ruth Wilma DeGeest, age 85, of Rapid City, SD passed away on Tuesday, the 19th day of July, 2011. She was born on June 10, 1926 in Mannheim, Germany to German citizens, Rudolph and Carol Dumler. While a young woman in Germany at the end of WWII, she met and would later marry, Walter L. DeGeest, a U.S. Army soldier stationed in Mannheim, her husband of over 50 years, who preceded her in death in September of 2005. Ruth had become a licensed beautician before leaving Germany and carried on her profession, mostly out of her home, for many years. She also supplemented the family income by working at the Esquire Club, Canyon Lake Club, and the Embers in Rapid City. She was a devoted housewife and mother and left surviving her son: Ray of Rapid City, son: Jim of Springfield, SD; and her grandchildren: Luke of Rapid City and Kari of Leander, TX. Also surviving her are her aunt and uncle of Germany: Maria and Gustav Yaeger and various cousins, also in Germany. You could take Ruth out of Germany, but you could never take Germany out of Ruth. She believed in a simple and frugal life and for the better part of her adult life was always there to cook you a good German dish if you had the time. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, July 25, 2011 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard, with Rev. Bob Jacobs from Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial of her cremains will take place at a later at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, South Dakota.
