Sally was born on December 18, 1935 in Council Bluffs, IA to Fred and Laura Mulholland. She graduated from Colorado Women's college in 1955 with an A.A., State University of Iowa in 1957 with a B.A, and South Dakota State University in 1973 with a M.Ed. degree. She majored in Political Science with a Teaching Major, minoring in English and masters in Guidance and Counseling. She married Marshall, who she met while working at Mt. Rushmore, in 1956. After moving to Iowa to finish school, they moved to Lead, SD, where Sally taught junior high. They moved to Rapid City in 1965. Sally didn't return to teaching until all of her children were in school and her master's degree had been completed. While raising her children, Sally continued with P.E.O., bridge, reading, music, exercise, and sewing and knitting. She held various offices in the organizations in which she participated and was active in schools and church. She taught English for 3 years at North Jr. High and 2 years at Dakota Jr. High. In 1980, Sally transitioned from teaching to student counseling at Stevens High School. She retired in June of 2005. She enjoyed the church handbell choir, cross country skiing, volksmarches, travel, and jelly making. Her favorite quote at age 50, "I'm not over the hill. I'm at the top, and I' not ready to slide down the other side yet." Her children remember her as a patient, gentle mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Sally was an accomplished pianist and often would play for hours. She was a dedicated individual who loved teaching and who was passionate about the Black Hills. She was an active and dedicated member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and P.E.O.
A memorial service is scheduled for March 7, 2016 at 11:00 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Black Hills Humane Society. The family would like to thank the Fountain Springs staff for their care and dedication over the last few years.
