Obituary

RAPID CITY -- Scott Hickey, 57, a lifelong native of Rapid City, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born Jan. 24, 1953, in Rapid City, the son of Warner and DeMaris Hickey. He graduated from Rapid City Stevens High School in 1971 and later attended South Dakota State University. Scott worked as an insurance claims adjuster for many years. Upon his retirement he channeled his time and energy toward the passion of his life, Little League Baseball. For 28 years, he was the manager of the Roadbuilders of Canyon Lake Little League, a team which was started by his father in 1958. The Roadbuilders have won 761 games and many city championships under the leadership of Scott and his father. Scotts lasting legacy will be the life values he taught the hundreds of young boys who played for the team. He always stressed the need to work hard and play fair in a competitive manner. Scott was featured in an ESPN spot during the Little League World Series coverage and was recently interviewed for an article in the Rapid City Journal. Scotts interest in sports extended beyond baseball, however. For several years he officiated baseball, football and basketball throughout the area and traveled extensively to view major sporting events. In later years he was a keen observer of sports statistics and enjoyed playing softball, golf and fantasy football. Scott is survived by two brothers, Mike, Rapid City, and Doug, Denver; as well as six nieces and nephews, Maxx Hickey, Vermillion, Meghan Hickey, Minneapolis, Sarah Holst, Lafayette, Colo., Anne Hickey, Denver, Dan Hickey, Chicago, and Erica Everson, Rapid City; and the five children of his nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorials to Canyon Lake Little League and the American Diabetes Association.
