Obituary

Shirley Faust, age 87, passed away peacefully June 14th at Bella Vista Nursing Home with her family at her side. Shirley was born on the family farm near Rockham, SD on Dec. 5, 1927 to Mable and Verne Jackson. She graduated from St. Lawrence High School and then earned her teaching certificate. She taught all 8 grades at a country school. Shirley married Laverne Faust on Nov. 25, 1946 after he returned from serving in the Navy during WWII. They became the original "LaVerne and Shirley". They were married for 67 years. They lived in Miller, SD where their four daughters were born. They moved to Rapid City, SD in 1952 where there two sons were born. Laverne and Shirley purchased Robbinsdale Cleaners. Shirley ran the office, made deliveries and was the seamstress. Shirley was President of the Ladies Auxiliary for the VFW for two years and was also a member of the American Business Women's Association. She was honored to receive the Woman of the Year Award while she was a member of the ABWA. Shirley was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making matching outfits for her daughters and later, for her grandchildren. Shirley was an Avon representative for many years. She considered her many customers as friends and won many awards with Avon. She loved collecting costume jewelry. Shirley and Laverne were always there to cheer the grandchildren and the great grandchildren on at their various activities. Near the end of her life she enjoyed spending Sundays with her son Michael and visits from all her children and grandchildren. The entire family will miss her greatly but are happy her suffering is now over. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Sherry (Bill) Gikling, Linda (John) Maas, Barbara (Jerry) Mitzel, (Bonnie (Tom) Martley; her son Michael Faust, all of Rapid City, SD and Joe (Christine) Faust of Woodland Hills, CA; 13 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Shirley is also survived by her sisters, Verna Hoffman, Karen Pflanz, Rene Kelnhofer, and brothers, Clifford Jackson, Dick Jackson and Lyle Jackson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three siblings. Visitation will be on Monday, June 22, from 6-7 pm, with a 7 pm Christian wake service at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A Christian funeral mass will be offered at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 23, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with the Rev. Michel Mulloy presiding. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery.
