RAPID CITY- Shirley Sackman, 85, died Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House.
Shirley Cecelia Van Berkom was born October 17, 1930 in Powers Lake, North Dakota to John Henry and Floy (Hilborn) Van Berkom. The second of four children.
She graduated from Powers Lake Schools and two year of Minot State College (now Minot State University) and graduated from Valley City State (now North Dakota State University).
She married Bert Sackman in 1952. They lived at Streeter, North Dakota where she taught school and Bert raised Hereford cattle.
During this time, they shared their house with three foster children, Doug, Billy, and David.
After selling the ranch to NDSU for a Grassland Experiment Station, they moved to Piedmont, SD, where they enjoyed twenty good years.
Bert passed away in 1996, and Shirley moved into Rapid City. She was a member of the First Congregational Church UCC.
Shirley enjoyed golf, line dancing, and reading. She was a regular donor at United Blood Services.
Shirley is survived by her brother, Dale (JoAnn) Van Berkom; three sister-in-law, Violet Nelson, Bismarck; Alice Wiese, Washburn; Janice Syverson, New Smyrna Beach, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert; and by her sisters: Jennie Germain, Sheridan, WY; and Carol Hammer, Sidney, MT.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2016 at First Congregational Church UCC (1200 Clark St.) with Rev. Kathleen Batchelder officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to services.
Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.
