Obituary

Shirley Ann Schlottman passed away peacefully on June 19, 2022, leaving a 90-year legacy as a loving wife, mother, grandma, aunt, and a faithful friend who saw the world through an optimistic lens.

Shirley was married to George "Bud" Schlottman for 61 years.  Together they raised four children, Neal, David, Cathy, and Linda.  The family affectionately referred to her as Mutter, the German word for mother.   As a mother, Shirley was compassionate, thoughtful, and non-judgmental.  The glass was always half full.  At the same time, Shirley instilled the values of personal responsibility, accountability, and love of God in her kids. Shirley's grandchildren were her pride and joy.  From golf cart rides to endless games of SkipBo, Shirley showered her grandkids with warmth and love.  She was a fixture on the sideline of countless soccer games and an avid choir, band, and orchestra concertgoer.   As much as Shirley loved her kids and grandkids, it was widely known that the true targets of her affection were the family dogs! The love was visibly mutual, as the first person any dog in the family would gravitate to was Shirley.

Shirley earned her undergraduate degree in home economics from South Dakota State University and went on to work for Black Hills Power and Light and US Bank and its predecessors.  As the "hub of the wheel" in the family, Shirley made managing the household, from planning family activities, to making her signature chocolate chip cookies, to keeping a tidy home seem easy.  She was a master at multi-tasking!

Shirley was known as a loyal and caring friend.  She and Bud were blessed by a circle of long-time friends and relatives who shared decades of golfing, happy hours, card games, Saturday morning breakfasts, weekends at Angostura and birthday celebrations.  She loved being involved in PEO, sorority, bridge club and social activities.  She welcomed leadership roles, especially if that meant lending her financial management skills.

For twenty-four years, Bud and Shirley split their time between Rapid City and Mesa, Arizona.  This was the perfect compromise, as Bud loved the desert and Shirley loved the Black Hills.  As she wished, Shirley's final resting place is in the beautiful Black Hills, alongside the love of her life.

Shirley is survived by her children and their spouses, Neal and Susan Schlottman, David and Lynne Schlottman, Cathy Rosonke, and Linda and Brian Iverson; grandchildren Andrew Schlottman, Joel (Bailey) Schlottman, Kara Schlottman, Beth Knopick, Matt (Tayler) Schlottman, Emily Iverson, and Dan Iverson; great grandchildren Logan and Drake.  And of course, granddogs Lucky, Dutton, Penny, Bernie, Alex, Nala, Leia, MaeBell, LeiLuna, HarelyMae, Leia, Zoey, Lucy, Thor, Indi, Odin, Sylvi, Leo, Spartacus; grandcats Phil, Lola, and Winston.

Memorial service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City at 11:00 AM, July 6, 2022.  Memorial gifts can be made to Zion Lutheran Church or The Humane Society of the Black Hills.
