Obituary

Shirley Winter, 82, of Rapid City, SD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 13th, 2025, at Avantara Saint Cloud in Rapid City. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18th, 2025, at Osheim-Schmidt Funeral Home, in Rapid City, SD, with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, and lunch will be served at Red Rocks Country Club at 11:30 a.m.

Shirley was born on November 8, 1942, in Livermore, California, to Robert and Edna (Speck) McLaughlin. She was raised in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, alongside her brother Butch and their mother Edna. Shirley graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1960, where she met her husband of 62 years, Robert "Bob" Winter. She was fondly known to many as "Snooks" and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Wessington Springs.

Shirley was a proud mother to her four children, Scott, Brad, Jason "Jay", and Lauriann "Bubba".

She embodied love and warmth, always ready with open arms to offer comfort and care to anyone in need. Her nurturing spirit knew no bounds, making everyone who entered her home feel cherished and safe. Whether through her thoughtful advice, homemade meals, or simple acts of kindness, Shirley had a unique way of making everyone feel like they were the most important person in the world. Her support and loving presence were constants in her children's lives, as she eagerly attended every event or sports game, always cheering them on, no matter what.

In 1993, Shirley and Bob moved to Rapid City, SD, with their youngest, Bubba, to be closer to the rest of their children. Over the years they welcomed eight grandchildren into their family and embraced the title of grandparents. Many years later, they became great-grandparents to nine, soon to be ten, great-grandchildren. Shirley was a beloved grandmother, remembered for the care and devotion she showed her grandchildren throughout their lives. She was committed to attending every game and event she could, and her grandchildren could always count on her presence in the stands, cheering them on. Always up for an adventure, she would drop whatever she was doing to spend time with them. Shirley held her time with her grandchildren close to her heart, treasuring every moment spent with them.

As a woman who always put others first, she spent her life helping those in need and always willing to lend a hand. Shirley retired from Black Hills Works in 2010, where she was a Home Manager and Direct Support Professional for 14 years. She then volunteered for several years at the Suzie Cappa Art Center.

Shirley's love was unconditional, and her heart was as big as the world itself, always giving without expecting anything in return. Her legacy of kindness and nurturing will forever live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know her.

Shirley is survived in death by her brother Butch McLaughlin; sister-in-law Geri Barta; children, Scott (Kristi) Winter, Brad (Clayton) Winter, Jason Winter, and Lauriann (Andy) Fuhrman; grandchildren, Dylan (Esma) Winter, Shelby (Nathan) Wentz, Riley (Megan) Winter, Nathan (Abbigale) Winter, Mikenzie (Kyle) Carlson, Cody (Amber) Winter, Kaley Fuhrman, and Brecken Fuhrman; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Collins, Liam, Colbie, Ari, Lawrence, Beverly, Charlotte, Knox, and baby Carlson.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Winter; parents, Robert and Edna McLaughlin; sister-in-law Bonnie McLaughlin, sister-in-law Carol (Bruce) Pier, brother-in-law Roger Parks, sister-in-law Elaine (David) Tripp, and brother-in-law Duane (June) Winter.
