RAPID CITY--Sister Jean Marie Tognotti, O.S.B., 52, died Saturday, May 22, 2010, at St. Martin Monastery after a lengthy illness. She was born June 19, 1957 in Rapid City, daughter of Raymond and Mary (Pourier) Tognotti. She graduated from St. Martins Academy in 1976, attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for one year, and entered St. Martin Monastery in 1978. She made her first profession as a Benedictine Sister in 1980 and her perpetual profession in 1985. She received a B.A. in Christian ministry from Mary College in 1983 and an M.A. in pastoral ministry from Boston College in 2005. For 27 years, Sister Jean Marie served in religious education and youth ministry in various parishes, including St. Isaac Jogues and Blessed Sacrament parishes in Rapid City; St. Catherine of Siena parish, Laguna Beach, CA; and Sacred Heart parish, Pine Ridge. Survivors include the Benedictine Sisters of St. Martin Monastery; her parents; two sisters, Lisa Tognotti and Jodeen (Tom) Stone; and a brother, Darrell Tognotti, all of Rapid City. A wake will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Sacred Heart parish, Pine Ridge. The vigil at St. Martin Monastery will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at Terra Sancta Chapel, (Old St. Martin Monastery chapel) with the Rev. Steve Sanford, S.J., presiding. Burial will be in St. Martin Monastery Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial in the Terra Sancta cafeteria. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to further her work at Sacred Heart Church (Pine Ridge) Youth Ministry Fund.
