Sister Marie McTighe, OSB, 84, Rapid City, died April 14, 2010 at a local nursing home after a long illness. The seventh of fourteen children of Cumian and Marguerite (Swafford) McTighe, she was born at the family home near Maurine on April 27, 1925. Her early education took place a country school; she attended high school in Bancroft, SD and at St. Martins Academy, Sturgis, after she became a postulant in 1944. Sr. Marie was received as a novice in 1946; she made temporary promises in 1947 and perpetual monastic promises in 1951. Sr. Maries ministries included domestic duties at the motherhouse, parish school missions, Sisters hospitals and the Bishops House in Rapid City. She also served as a catechist for many years and took care of young children of working parents. After poor health caused her to withdraw, Sr. Marie spent several years in retirement at St. Martins. Since the summer of 2008 she resided at a local nursing home. Survivors include one brother, Joe, Faith; four sisters, Elizabeth Sundstrom, Deadwood; Dorothy Schoenfelder and Amy Gruntmeier, Iroquois and Helen Nuzum, Longview, WA; a number of nieces and nephews, and the Sisters of St. Martin Monastery. Preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers and six sisters. Visitation will be from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at St. Martin Monastery. A Vigil (Vespers of the Dead) will take place Sunday, April 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the monastery chapel. Bishop Blase Cupich will preside at the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 19, in the Terra Sancta chapel (formerly the monastery chapel) with priests of the diocese assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Martin Monastery Cemetery. A memorial has been established for St. Martin Monastery Retirement Fund.
