Sonja Renee
Love
October 3, 1976 – April 27, 2026
Sonja Love, 49, of Rapid City, passed away surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on October 3, 1976, in Rapid City, to Diane and Shelby Burrus Sr. Sonja was a devoted wife, an extraordinary mother, a beloved daughter, sister, and a trusted nurse whose care extended far beyond her profession. She had a rare gift, she made people feel seen. Whether speaking with a lifelong friend or someone she had just met, Sonja created connection. She was often the last one at a gathering, taking the time to truly know people.
Her greatest pride and deepest joy was her family. As a wife and mother, Sonja gave everything she had, quietly, selflessly, and without expectation of recognition. She built a home filled with love, strength, and unwavering support. She raised her daughters to be strong, to know their worth, and to stand up for themselves, lessons that will carry forward as part of her lasting legacy.
Sonja was a nurse by profession, but a caregiver by nature. She was confident in her abilities and deeply committed to helping others, yet those closest to her knew that her greatest passion was caring for her family. She did countless unseen things every day, the small, steady acts of love that define a life well lived.
She faced her illness with remarkable strength. Even in her most difficult days, she chose hope. Even in pain, she continued to care about others—asking about their lives, offering empathy, and lifting those around her. Her fight was not loud, but it was powerful. She showed what true strength looks like: resilience, courage, and the decision to keep going, even when it was hard.
Sonja is survived by her loving husband, Jason; their daughters, Gabbie and Finley, who were the center of her world; her parents, Diane and Shelby Burrus Sr.; and her brother, Shelby Burrus Jr. She is also survived by extended family and many friends who loved her deeply. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and connection. Those who knew her will remember her warmth, her ability to bring people together, and the way she made others feel valued and cared for. Her influence lives on in her daughters, in her family, and in the many lives she touched.
Though her time here feels far too short, Sonja often shared that she had lived a blessed life—one filled with the love of her family and the connections she cherished most.
Her family finds comfort in knowing she is at peace, free from pain, and that her love remains present in their lives every day.
