CUSTER – Stanley "Stan" L. Diebel, 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Monument Health in Rapid City.

Stan was born on December 15, 1947, in Washington, Illinois, to Edward and Arta June (Dixon) Diebel. On June 19, 1977, he married the love of his life, Judith Melvin, and together they built a life centered on family, faithfulness, and shared adventures.

Stan was a devoted husband and a proud father to his two daughters, Katie and Stephanie. He encouraged them throughout their lives to work hard, pursue their goals, and always strive to be the very best versions of themselves. His guidance, wisdom, life lessons, and unwavering support left a lasting impact on his family.

A true outdoorsman, Stan found joy in nature and took every opportunity to be outside. Whether he was hiking scenic trails, tending to his garden, working in the yard, or hunting, he appreciated the beauty and peace of the natural world. He also took great pride in managing the family farms, leasing the land to farmers and ensuring it remained well cared for through the years.

Stan was a lifelong student of history and an avid reader, always eager to learn something new. He especially enjoyed sharing his knowledge with family and friends, often turning everyday conversations into fascinating history lessons. He was also a fan of Bing Crosby and Katherine Jenkins and found great enjoyment in listening to music.

Stan and Judy loved traveling together, especially on road trips throughout the western United States. The Black Hills held a special place in his heart, and after retirement they made their home in Custer, where he found peace in the beauty of the hills and the slower pace of life.

Grateful for having shared his life are his beloved wife of 49 years, Judy Diebel; his daughters, Katie Diebel and Stephanie Diebel; and extended family members and friends who will remember him for his kindness, wisdom, quiet strength, and love of learning.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
