Rapid City - Stanley Halla, 92, died Sunday, November 09, 2014 at the Bella Vista Golden Living Center in Rapid City. Stan was born on December 28, 1921 in Yankton to Conrad and Selma (Erickson) Halla. Stan served in WWII in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Pennsylvania from 1942-1945. He graduated from Yankton College where he met his wife, Betty Joyce Ireland. They were married on October 31, 1946 in Yankton. She passed away exactly 5 years earlier on November 9, 2009. Stan was an avid gardener, active in senior Olympics, and was a teacher at Stevens High School in Rapid City for many years. After retiring from teaching, he worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter. Stan loved life, always had a joke to tell or a smile on his face and was never in a bad mood. It was only his granddaughter's mispronunciation of the word "Grandpa" that led him to be called Grumpy for the rest of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers Ralph and Harvey Halla, and sister Evelyn Anderson. Survivors are his sons, Bruce (Carol) Halla of Ladson, SC; Brian (Nancy) Halla of Greeley, CO; daughter Diane Halla of Madison, SD; and granddaughters Dawn Halla of Bloomington, IL and Ambur Halla of Greeley. His memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 15th at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Blvd. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
