Steven Quinn
Hauswald
May 6, 1950 – March 18, 2026
Steven Quinn Hauswald (1950-2026)
Steven Quinn Hauswald, son of the late Robert E. and Margaret A. (Daniels) Hauswald, was born on May 6, 1950, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and passed away on March 18, 2026, at his home in Rapid City, South Dakota. As the middle child of seven “Hausies,” he fulfilled his destiny to keep the ”teeter totter” of life in balance from childhoods at home on Summit Avenue to scattered locations in adulthood.
Steve met challenges head on from the time he was a small boy. After a diagnosis of Perthes Disease, a rare childhood condition affecting the hip, he was treated at Crippled Children’s Hospital & School, later known as Children’s Care Hospital & School. He finished his education at Lowell Elementary, Edison Junior High and Washington High School. In 1970, he enlisted in the Navy and left Sioux Falls for recruit training in San Diego, California.
After his discharge from the Navy, Steve continued serving others as a fireman and EMT in Rapid City, South Dakota. His colleagues described him as a genuine friend and excellent co-worker who was focused and always striving to be better.
Steve loved his family and friends. He had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor but also was an excellent listener. He was not above pranks and enjoyed a good time. His Harley brought him great joy.
Steve is survived by his three sons—Matthew (Maeve) Hauswald of Monroe, Washington, Peter (Isabel Thorpe) Hauswald of Spearfish, South Dakota, and Daniel (Sara Blade) Hauswald of Bend, Oregon—as well as thirteen grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Mike (Nancy) Hauswald, Pat (Maureen) Hauswald, Tom Hauswald, Peggy Hauswald, Mary Hauswald, Margaret (Kent) MacCleary, Brian (Judy) Hauswald, and an abundance of nieces and nephews.
Steve was a veteran, a firefighter, a paramedic, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, and a friend to many who loved him. He left this world better than he found it. Who could forget someone who gave us so much to remember?
