Steven "Steve" Glen Wintersteen, of Rapid City, South Dakota, died on July 7, 2025, in Rapid City.

A memorial service will be held on October 6, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Blvd, Rapid City, South Dakota. Burial will follow that day from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery, 20901 Pleasant Valley Dr, Sturgis, South Dakota.

He was born on April 23, 1953, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota To Glen Richard and Ruth LaVonne (Benson) Wintersteen. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls in 1971 and went on to earn his pharmacy degree from South Dakota State University in 1977. In 1979, he began his career as a commissioned officer pharmacist with the United States Public Health Service, serving with Indian Health Services. Over the course of 26 years, he worked in South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Washington, and Oregon. He retired in 2005 with the rank of commander, a role that reflected his long commitment to public service and professional care. His military service is also remembered through his rank as commander in the United States Public Health Service.

Outside of his professional life, Steve found joy in the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, photography, and backpacking, and he loved spending time in nature.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Steve is survived by his sisters, Laurie (David) Johnson and Robyn Wintersteen. Laurie and Robyn were an important part of his family circle, and Steve’s memory will be cherished by those who knew and loved him.

Steve will be remembered for his years of dedicated service, his love of the outdoors, and the steady presence he held in the lives of his family and friends.
