Susan L. Miller, 50, left us early Sunday morning from a long battle with cancer. She wanted to say; When I am in the presence of God, I am in the absence of the body. _2nd. Corinthians, 5 verse 8. Susan was born to Donald and Betty Jacobsen on October 25th, 1958 and grew up on a farm near Dallas, SD. She completed her R.N. degree with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, at USD. The start of her career began at Rosebud Hospital in Gregory, SD. Susan married her sweetheart. Martin (Mark) Miller II. They lived in El Cajon, California where Mark served and retired from the Navy. Together they raised two sons, Nathanial and Samuel. While living in El Cajon, Susan taught nursing and worked in the hospitals emergency rooms. In 1997, Susan and her family moved to Rapid City, SD., so her husband could pursue his education. Through the last 12 years, Susan has been employed at Rapid City Regional Hospital as an E.R. nurse, at SDSU as a nursing instructor and at the Black Hills Surgery Center as a floor nurse, night supervisor and most recently, the Director of Executive Health which she developed. Susan loved the beach, her flower beds, teaching and remodeling. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines Choir and 1st Evangelical Free Church. Her home-made Chocolate Chip cookies were everyones favorite. Susan said she was most proud of her boys faith in Christ and how they witnessed their conviction for Jesus. Susans contagious sense of humor will be greatly missed. Susan is survived by her devoted husband, Mark, her two sons, Nathan and Sam, her loving mother Betty Jacobsen-Wortman of Gregory, SD, her loving mother-in-law, Lois Miller of Gregory, three brothers, Reverend Gary (Diane) Jacobsen of Hot Springs, Stan (Tami) Jacobsen of Ainsworth, NE, John (Shelly) Jacobsen of Burke, SD; one brother-in-law, Mike (Kristie) Miller, Sioux Fall, SD; three sisters, Judy (David ) Drey of Hartford, SD, Jeanie (Steve) Montgomery of Rapid City, and Rose (Tony) Meyer of Dell Rapids, SD and two sister-in-laws, Susan (Doug) Ferrin, Prescott, AR and Marta (Bill) Haines, Gregory, SD. Two most important friends in Susans life, and now, sisters are, Jenny Bogan of El Cajon, CA and Fran Sletten of Rapid City. Susan was also blessed with the siblings from the Wortman family, Cindy (Kelly) Jones of Burke, SD, John (Angie) Wortman of Tucson, AR, Tom (Bev) Wortman of Pewaukee, WI, Lynn (Darrel) Holz of Freeman, SD, and Jim Jr. (Sue) Wortman of Gregory, SD; an Uncle, Reverend Allen (Lela) Bauslaugh of Gregory, SD and two aunts, Doris Marie Hamilton of Fremont, NE, and Kay (Dennis) McCarthy of Colorado Springs, CO and many nieces and nephews and cousins. Susan was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Amy, father, Donald Jacobsen, father-in-law, Martin L. Miller, brother-in-law, Thomas Miller and maternal and paternal grandparents. Others preceding her death includes, father James Wortman, brother Ted Wortman, and nephews, Samuel Montgomery and Josh Wortman. Susans dear friends at Black Hills Surgery Center were a big part of Susans life. Your loving care during her illness was greatly appreciated. You all are truly Gods nurses. Susans faith in Jesus Christ is demonstrated to us, as she wishes each of us to find our passion, and live it to the fullest. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 24, at First Evangelical Free Church with Rev. David Greenhood officiating. Inurnment will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. In Lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
