Obituary

Suzanne (Ford) Healy, 80 passed away at her home on Tuesday, February 3, 2009. Suzanne was born July 10th, 1928 in Brookings, South Dakota. She was raised in Estelline and Mitchell, South Dakota, and moved with her family to Rapid City in 1941. Her parents, May (Meaghan) Steele and Harry Ford, had four children: Thomas Ford (died in infancy); Mary Margaret (Ford) Forrette; Suzanne (Ford) Healy; and Michael Ford. Suzanne is survived by her brother, Michael Ford (Shirley Ford), her children, Tom Healy of San Diego, Mary Healy (David Hodgson) of Saint Paul, MN, Dena Healy of Seattle, her grandchildren, Michaela and Aedan Hodgson, and Jean Groethe, her lifelong friend. Her husband of 43 years, John Healy, died in 2005. Suzanne is survived by a number of beloved nieces and nephews living in Rapid City, Colorado, Montana, Minnesota, and Illinois. The family of Suzanne would like to especially honor and thank Bob Schwarz, who has been Suzannes constant companion over the past year and Marge Brunmeier, Suzannes friend and caregiver. Suzanne graduated from SDSU, studying journalism and home economics. She also graduated from BHSU with a degree in education. She taught school in the Rapid City School District for over twenty-five years, retiring from South Junior High where she taught geography and social studies for many years. Suzanne was active in the Democratic Party over the years, and played an important role in the Rapid City Education Association. Suzanne was appointed to serve on the Education Commission of the States (ECS) during her teaching career. Suzanne took great pride in her work as an educator. Suzanne is most loved by her family and friends for her sense of humor, her loyalty and dedication to family, friends, work and her appreciation of others interests and abilities. Suzanne loved the game of golf. She spent years trying to inspire her family to enjoy golf as much as she did, but met little success. She was fortunate, however, to find golf partners in several good friends. Sue also enjoyed traveling and visiting family members around the country. Visitation will be held at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Mass will be offered at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 9 at Black Hills National Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the American Diabetes Association in Sues honor.
