Obituary

Slideshow BLACK HAWK - Thomas Scott Soyland, 63, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Scott was born in Los Angeles County, CA on September 22, 1948 to Mabel and Tony Soyland. He moved to Orient, SD as a young boy and graduated from Faulkton High School. Scott married Cheryl Deiter in Faulkton, SD on May 18, 1968. They lived in the Faulkton/Orient area until 1983 when they moved to Piedmont and have lived in that area ever since. Scott spent most of the last 45 years in the farming and ranching business, as well as owning the Slash J Bar in Piedmont in the early 1990's. He was never defined however by how he earned his living. Scott was a cowboy and possessed all the skills and values attributed to that lifestyle. Whether it was roping a steer, branding calves, packing up a mountainside in the snow, or riding a trail in the sunshine, he was never more comfortable than on horseback. What he loved the most though was the campsite at the end of the day with his horse, dog, family, and friends around him. Over the years, that campsite may have looked like a softball field in Orient, a local bar with friends singing along to the Jukebox in Piedmont, riding the trail through the washout from Piedmont to Nemo with his family and friends, or spending time playing with his grandchildren, but it always looked like an opportunity to give of himself to those he loved. He also loved music, animals, having a project to work on in his shop, watching old westerns on TV, and the Green Bay Packers. Scott was devoted to his family. His joyous spirit, sense of humor, and huge heart were contagious, and a gift to all who knew and loved him. Scott is survived by his wife, Cheryl, Black Hawk; daughter, Amy Beth (Charlie), Piedmont; son, Christopher (Bridget), Black Hawk; six grandchildren: Samara, William, Gabriel, Madison, Mae, and Elsie; one sister, Bonnie Kirchmeier, Waubay, SD. He was preceded in death by his father, his mother and step father, one sister, and one brother. A Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
